How to Spot AI-Generated Content & Stay Secure in the Digital Age

AI is everywhere these days. From chatbots to image generators, artificial intelligence is changing the way we interact with technology. While AI can be a powerful tool, it also presents new challenges — especially when it comes to security, data privacy, and authenticity. Reel Time Tech host, Megan Kalemba, collaborated with The Unstoppables AI Director of Digital Strategy, Paul Wilch, to teach you all about how AI is being used professionally, the risks of sharing sensitive information, and how to recognize AI-generated content online.

HOW BUSINESSES ARE IMPLEMENTING AI—RISKS TO KEEP IN MIND!

AI is transforming nearly every industry, helping businesses automate processes, analyze data, and improve customer service. However, it is important to know how to utilize this powerful technology responsibly. Here are some risks companies should be aware of when integrating AI into their workflows:

  1. False Positives in Cybersecurity
AI-powered security tools can mistakenly flag legitimate activities as threats, potentially slowing down business operations.
  2. Over-Reliance on Automation
AI can streamline tasks, but human oversight is still necessary to validate AI-generated insights and ensure accuracy.
  3. Bias in AI Models
AI systems can inherit biases from the data they are trained on, leading to unfair or misleading outputs that can damage a company’s reputation.
  4. Shadow AI Risks
Employees using unauthorized AI tools without IT’s knowledge can create security vulnerabilities and compliance issues.
  5. Data Privacy Concerns
AI systems require data to learn and improve, but improper handling of sensitive information can lead to breaches or leaks.

AI learns in a way similar to the human brain—analyzing massive amounts of data, spotting patterns, and making predictions based on past experiences. Every time you enter a prompt into an AI tool, you contribute to its learning process. If you input sensitive company information, that data could potentially be recalled by AI in response to future prompts. Some AI platforms allow users to toggle off data-sharing features, but additional security measures often require paid accounts or subscriptions.

To stay secure, businesses should establish clear AI usage policies covering data protection, risk mitigation, and compliance requirements. Employees should also be aware of malicious AI lookalike websites designed to steal sensitive data, especially when working in public spaces & during high-risk industry busy seasons.

AI IN SOCIAL MEDIA: HOW TO SPOT FAKE CONTENT

AI-generated content is flooding social media, from eerily realistic videos to synthetic images and beyond. But if you look closely, there are telltale signs that reveal when AI is at play.

AI-GENERATED VIDEOS: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

  • Unnatural Blinking
AI struggles to replicate natural eye movement, leading to odd blinking patterns or an unnatural stare.
  • Lip Sync Issues
AI-generated faces often struggle to sync with audio, making them look like a poorly dubbed movie.
  • Strange Facial Movements
Overly smooth, robotic, or exaggerated expressions can be a giveaway that you’re looking at AI.

AI-GENERATED IMAGES: KEY RED FLAGS

  1. Weird Fingers & Hands
Too many, too few, or just bizarrely shaped fingers are a common AI flaw.
  2. Flawless Skin or Uncanny Perfection
AI tends to create overly smooth, symmetrical, or unrealistic-looking faces & scenery images.
  3. Background Glitches
Look for distorted patterns, warped text, or objects that don’t quite make sense.
  4. Misspelled Words
AI struggles with text generation in images, often producing nonsense words or jumbled letters.

AI IN THE COMMENT SECTION: SPOTTING FAKE ENGAGEMENT

AI-powered bots are all over social media, driving up engagement—sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. Here’s how to tell if you may be dealing with an AI-generated comment:

  • Generic, Vague Replies
AI-generated comments often lack specifics or sound overly polished.
  • Rapid-Fire Responses
If a comment appears just seconds after a post goes live, it could be a bot.
  • Off-Topic or Repetitive Content
Comments that have nothing to do with the post are usually AI, as it still struggles to comprehend the content of some videos & posts.

Some people even use AI maliciously to flood posts with negative comments, spreading misinformation or provoking arguments. Be wary that those “internet trolls” may just be bots, designed to make you mad!

AI VOICE CLONING: A SCAMMER’S FAVORITE NEW TOY

AI voice cloning is another growing concern, as it allows users to create near-perfect replicas of a person’s voice using just a few seconds of audio. Paul was able to create a convincing AI-generated voice clone from an audio clip as short as 11 seconds as an AI demonstration for a group of Boise State faculty & students, see the write-up about this demonstration in CRITER’s 01/22 weekly update!

AI Voice Cloning raises serious security risks, including fraudulent phone calls and impersonation scams. A simple but effective way to protect yourself? Set up a secret code word or phrase with your family & friends. If someone claiming to be a loved one calls and doesn’t know the code, you know something is off and should hang up immediately!

AI is a powerful tool, but it’s getting smarter every day, and so should we!

Whether you’re using AI in business or just scrolling through your social media feed, staying informed will help you navigate the digital world more safely!
